At long last Nakaba Suzuki is exploring the confusion of memories leading up to current events. Of the many mighty characters that populate the world of NANATSU NO TAIZAI, Estarossa has confounded us for weeks in regards to his true capability, personality, history, and emotional quality. An explanation has been long in the offing, but it seems that at long last the maestro has decided to level with the fans in order to finally clarify what has been going on behind the scenes. The build up to this point has been an arduous journey, and one that has at times tip toed around any form of explanation. Estarossa has developed into a profound enigma, and leaves us asking how he fits into the shared histories of our favourite characters.
When Suzuki first introduced us to Purgatory, he made it clear that Ban was going in to recover Meliodas' emotions in time save the Captain from what seemed to be an inevitable fate. We subsequently experienced the start of a new Holy War followed rapidly by Elizabeth's abduction by Estarossa. Over the course of that kidnapping it became known to us that Elizabeth could recall some fragmentary memories about Estarossa, but nothing in full detail. Estarossa on the other hand seemed to recall just fine the events that had lead him to his position as one of the Ten Commandments. Of those memories, the most notable one proved to be a heart wrenching revelation that Meliodas had stolen away Elizabeth's affections from a lovelorn Estarossa. In response to this news Elizabeth spoke those words that we had all been thinking upon hearing this information: "Meliodas would never say something like that. I'm sure ... your memory is mistaken ..." Fast forward to events in Purgatory, and Ban finally manages to locate Meliodas' emotions with all the difficulties that this particular job entails. In seeing the raw emotions shared between the two companions, it is impossible at best to believe that Meliodas would ever so emotionally scar someone that he cared for. Given what fragmentary glimpses we've seen from Estarossa's memories, their relationship appears to be one of genuine compassion. Despite whatever perceived shortcomings Estarossa may have suffered, Meliodas seems to have been more than willing to aid him in all his endeavors. How strange it is then that Estarossa is able to recall a more villainous Meliodas than the one we have experienced thus far. Plunging still further ahead, the newly minted trio of Ban, Meliodas, and Wild set course for the Demon King who supposedly guards a gate leading back to the real world. In the ensuing battle between four of the series most powerful characters, Suzuki reveals the Demon King to be one of the most formidable combatants introduced throughout his work. Capable of absorbing all forms of energy the Demon King continues to perpetuate in size and strength by virtue of his ability "The Ruler". After having overcome each of their special abilities, the Demon King then states one of the most perplexing things to have ever been said in NANATSU NO TAIZAI. He claims that he is unable to recall anything about Estarossa! As a matter of fact, even the great Demon King only remembers the briefest of summaries involving someone that is supposed to be his second son. Things finally become clear at the end of this chapter as both Meliodas and the Demon King conclude that their memories have been tampered with. Of all the characters in NANATSU NO TAIZAI only one has been able to so perfectly alter memories: Gowther the Goat Sin. It is in conclusion that we see Gowther riding on Hawk as he desperately chases after Elizabeth and Estarossa. Given the level of compassion displayed by the original Gowther, we are once more thrown into confusion about what his objectives must be in tampering with everyone's memories. For a long time there had been a significant amount of support for Merlin having a hand in altering everyone's memories because the range of her powers appeared to indicate that she may have used a level of clairvoyance to foresee how events might pan out. With that theory now dead in the water, we are entrapped by what little information we have pertaining to why Gowther might go to such lengths in order to hide Estarossa's true identity and history. Some people have remarked on the similarity between Gowther and Merlin's appearances. The reasons for why Gowther originally defected from the Demon King's service is yet another history that has yet to be made known to us. Given how long lived Merlin has proven to be she may yet have something to do with how events have unfolded up to this point. While Gowther is certainly a fearsome character in his own right, his being a doll makes it difficult to believe that he could come up with, and use such a heavily convoluted plot. Beyond operating on mere conjecture, and depending on how Nakaba Suzuki elaborates on Gowther's objectives, dispelling the enigma of Estarossa may prove to be of the most phenomenal reveals of the year!
